African Diaries

"I really envy the person who has never been to Africa, for he has so much to look forward to”
-One of the frames in our staircase reads.
Born in Punjab, brought up in Delhi, a few links in Dubai and that's all the connection, I had with the world....limited to India and just a few places in the Middle East. Then what sense does this frame make in my house?
Well, in the last one year, my horizons have broadened or shall I say stretched beyond control. My life changed upside down, when I met this guy of an Indian origin, a Gujarati, brought up in a small country in Southern Africa called Zambia and settled in the United States for over a decade..... {Phew}, the guy who I eventually got married to.
One of the best things about marrying him was that I a got a chance to visit Africa, the so called "Third World Continent", right after the wedding. Never in my wildest of dreams, had I thought of ever visiting ‘Zambia’ out of all the places in the world. Like anybody with no connections to Africa, I too had some preconceived notions of it being a gangster place with dark complexioned people of a gigantic built, who were more than often involved in some or the other notorious activities....just a plain scary picture! I often wondered why my husband always raved about the place so much. Must be a personal bias, I thought. After all I also think highly of Ghaziabad (a small city in the national capital region, where I grew up)....err well, a little highly...ahh ok the place is just alright, but it's home whatsoever!
So after a relaxed honeymoon in Bali and finishing the post marriage traditional activities in India, here we were, stepping outside the Lusaka airport. The first thing that catches my attention was the sky..it was oh-so-beautiful!! I noticed the clear skies, like I had never seen ever in my entire life. I was so enamored by the celestial sphere adorned with white fur like clouds, I could stare at it forever. We sat outside the airport for a little while and I realized that I just could not keep my eyes off the sky. Trust me, it was that charming. This was my first impression of Zambia.
After a brief halt in the capital city, we took a tiny toy-like plane to a place called Ndola, which would take us closer to my husband’s hometown- Kitwe. I found this plane pretty amusing, since it had a seating capacity of a little over 20 passengers (now you know that my 'toy- like' phrase wasn't an exaggeration). Travelling in it was definitely a one of its kind experience for me. It was quite fun watching the forest infested land from the African sky, since these planes do not fly at a very high altitude. So the land is visible for almost half of the 45 minutes long journey,
Kitwe, the Copper Belt, as it is called, is the city where I spent the majority of my time in Africa. It was pure nature for me, totally untouched by the modern day pollutants. Coming from a place like Delhi, just the clean, fresh air could stimulate all my senses. The icing on the cake was that it was the monsoon season. The rain, as it is holds the capability of making me joyous at any time. And the place could just bring out the best in it. Serenity personified!
Another striking feature of my trip was the language. People spoke English...with an African accent and with a twist.
I sat on the dinner table at a friend's place and the guy was narrating some incident to us: "I was waiting at the airport and I saw my queen coming out of the plane.....".
He was referring to his mum.
'OMG, that is so sweet. He calls his mum his queen! He must really adore her', I thought and smiled....just to realize sometime later that that's how people referred to their mums in Kitwe. 'Bally' the dad and 'Queen' the mum!
At a different occasion, I heard my husband telling someone, "The evening was fun. We all got together and doped!"
'Doped???? My husband takes drugs? Damn...I didn’t know this about him!!', I thought, getting all worked up inside at this new found revelation. I was wrong again. Doping means ‘drinking...alcohol’. Ahhh what a relief!
There are many such slangs that they use, which I found quite interesting, like ‘boping’ means dancing, a ‘scave’ is a cigarette, ‘cabin’ is the house, ‘to chow’ is to eat, they refer to their friends as ‘Excay’ or ‘Butah’. It works as ‘yaar’ in Hindi. The funniest is yet to come, your girlfriend is your ‘squeeze’. They also pick up words and phrases from their local language called Bemba, which they mostly use to communicate with their domestic helps, which by the way, are all local Zambians!
Another amusing sight that I witnessed during my stay was local African women knocking on the door, selling Indian vegetables like Okra, Dhaniya, Pyaaz and greeting my mum-in-law by a smiling ‘Jai Shri Krishna’. This was literally a jaw dropping moment for me. I mean...seriously? The women took the efforts of learning stuff about our local culture to improve their sales. That’s commendable, I must say.
Apart from that, like any other foreign country, they too have local Indian societies like the Hindu Hall and Club Eye Sees, where the Indian community people get together every once in a while for Indian movie nights, local talent performances, observing Indian festivals or just celebrating Narendra Modi’s victory. If nothing at all, they would just get together for a couple of drinks.
After a month long stay in Zambia, I have to admit, I fell in love with the place. My viewpoint about Africa changed completely and I realized how general perceptions can be so misleading sometimes. I can vouch for every word of the picture frame in my staircase today. If you want to take a peaceful nap in nature’s lap, Africa is the place to be. Go for safaris, get a real time experience of the exquisite wildlife, talk a walk with the lions, awe at the magnificent Victoria Falls...I assure you that you will fall in love with Africa too!

Are you ready to get 'cuffed' this season?

November has ended, the leaves have fallen, the sweaters are out of the closet, Dunkin’ Donuts has started offering pumpkin- spiced coffees and darkness constitutes major part of your day (thanks to the daylight saving). It’s that time of the year when you tend to get into a hibernation mode and you might want to keep your ‘dens’ ready. - Happy Cuffing season people!
Are you scratching your head and wondering what I’m talking about? Well, for the uninformed ones, it’s the fall- winter months that formulates the Cuffing season, when the cold outside makes you too lazy for any outdoor activities and all you want to do is snuggle in a blanket with someone and watch an illegally downloaded movie or stream one on Netflix. It’s like the winter version of a summer fling. Essentially, it’s about having a seasonal cuddle buddy and not really getting into a long term serious relationship.

Though there is no scientific evidence to prove that the cuffing season exists, but it has emerged as the next big thing and is here to stay, it seems. Howbeit, there are quite a few factors which do correlate to the cuffing season like the lack of sufficient sunlight during these months, which in turn effects your hormones, sleep cycles, energy levels. You do tend to stay indoors most of the times and staying alone at home doesn’t even sound like an exciting idea. Also, have you noticed so many birthdays falling in July- August? If we do a little back calculation here, we do realize that the conception of these babies happened during November- December, thus hinting at the existence of cuffing season.

Apart from Mother nature, it is also the societal pressure that builds up high during this time and urge people to couple up. After all, who wants to spend the holiday season alone. And don’t you to want someone to kiss when the clock strikes 12 on New Years? Oh and let’s not forget Valentines Day, you definitely need a date for this day. So not only does your cuddle buddy keeps you warm during this winter season, but also acts as your show off momento at the social gatherings.

How to find a cuff buddy?
There are people who go by proper planning and start their homework way back in summer. They have their line up act in place and know exactly who their cuff buddy could be this season. So they carefully sift through their dates all summer and choose their best suited winter buddy.
There are others who are late risers and try their luck with an out of the blue ‘Hey how have you been’ texts to their entire contact list. If that doesn’t work, they resort to their Facebook friend list. This, I believe, is more of a desperate move that clearly shows, and may not go down too well.
To aid the cuff hunt, Craigslist has also come to rescue. Yes, believe it or not, I did see an ad for ’Needed: Fall Boyfriends’ on Craigslist.
And let’s not forget our best friends: The Dating Apps. Coffee meets Bagel, Plenty of Fish, Howaboutwe, Tinder, Zoosk are a few of them with a high success rate. Also, Steve Harvey has launched his new dating site- Delightful.com, right in time for this cuffing season.

How to survive a ‘Cuff Relationship’
Cuffing season doesn’t have to make you a desperado. Do not settle for just about anybody. After all, you are looking to spend the entire season with that person (if not your life). Remember, if this is not a long term relationship, it is not even a one night stand. You should be with someone with whom you connect.
Accrediting to the temporary aspect of it, you should be prepared to move on, when the time requires. You are not obliged to stay together forever. As per the Cuffing season expert Jacques Morel, there should be no place for guilt in such relationships, since everything is fair in love and war.
Managing the expectations of the relationship beforehand helps in the problems that may arise because of the shorter shelf life of this phenomenon.
Know your worth and do not be on an emotional roller coaster. At the same time, if it does want to bloom into ‘love’, let it be. Do not be too stringent on yourself.
Since it is not really a ‘relationship’, do not expect to meet each others families, friends, being on your cuff’s priority list.
Lastly and most importantly, protect yourself and be safe (you know what I mean).

On the flip side, some people also feel that this temporary dating idea is a complete waste of time. It is like lowering your standards, getting into a a psuedo- relationship, which they know it for a fact, is not going anywhere. You also risk the chances of getting someone in an emotional setback when you un-cuff in spring. You may feel that everything is moving at a pace much faster than you expect. So, if the cuffing idea does not appeal it you, it is absolutely alright to stay away from it too.
However, I feel, it’s a individual choice and there is absolutely no harm in having a snuggle buddy, as long as you both feel up for it. Having said that, giving in to a peer pressure regarding such things should be an absolute no- no.

So make the most out of the chilly winters and happy cuffing!

America- The so called 'land of opportunities'!

‘America is another name for opportunity.’   - Ralph Waldo Emerson

So dear Ralph, this piece of writing is dedicated to you. It’s a tale of my struggle for survival in your “land of opportunities”- the United States of America.

A year and a half back, when I revealed to people that I was getting married, one obvious question that I was constantly asked was, “Who is the guy and what does he do?”
“Well, my man is a financial advisor in Miami, and I would be relocating to Florida after the wedding.”
“Oh WOW!! MIAMI!! UNITED STATES!! How lucky!!” was what I usually got as a response. A lot of people envied me for being able to shift my base to the most sought after place on this earth. US- The superpower!

As for me, I was definitely excited about getting married to the man I loved, but moving to the States...not really. I was to be going on an H4 visa (dependent of an H1b visa holder), a status that not many people would get excited about. It allows you to legally enter the country and stay here, use the country’s resources, obtain a driver’s license, open bank accounts but does NOT allow you to work!

Ralph, just for your information, I have been a fairly good student, graduated from the top ranking university in the country and worked with one of India’s largest Indian E Commerce company for close to 6 years. I left my job on a managerial level, where I had my own team looking up to me and working on the ethics instilled in them by me. Not being able to work was one of the worst things that could happen to me.

Nevertheless, the love for my husband overpowered the love for my career. I could always find an employer in the US, who would give me the job and sponsor my work visa. My self confidence was high enough and the Barney Stinson in me said… “Challenge Accepted!”

So here I am, sitting in Florida, which for the records, is beautiful!! Coming from a place like Delhi, the greenery, the blue sky, the water bodies, the organized government, the smooth traffic, people with civic sense...all of this was a welcome change. I am lucky enough to get a wonderful new family, an extremely supportive husband, a beautiful house, a gorgeous city to live in, but jobs….aaaahh it wasn’t half as easy as I thought. Finding a job in a country that works opposite to where I come from, with no US education or experience was notably difficult.

How is US the opposite? Well, India- day; US- night; India- kilometers; US- miles; India- kilograms; US- pounds; India- cricket; US- baseball; India- right hand driving; US- left hand driving…...Phew! The list is long.

Anyways, I took my time settling down to this new place, understanding how things are done, adapting myself to these changes. And then a few months back, I realized that it was now time to pull up my socks and find a job. One, I desperately wanted to get out of my pajamas and two (most importantly), the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) was going to open their annual window for accepting work visa applications on 1st April till 7th April. If I am unable to find a sponsor before that, I will have to buy a new stack of pajamas to last me another year of sitting unemployed at home.

While researching on the H1b visa process, I came to realize that all the first time H1b applications submitted during this period, will get a start date for 1st October and not anytime before that. This would mean that even if my petition for the visa gets filed during this window, I cannot legally start working till 1st October.

So now, I not only needed find an employer who likes me, thinks I am fit for the vacant job profile, is aware of the immigration process, ready to sponsor me but also who willing to wait for another 6 months to have me on board. Are you freakin’ kidding me!! Wasn’t finding a job alone challenging enough?

But even this didn’t make me give up Ralph. I tried even harder to find a match for me, went for up to 6 interviews in a week, not including the telephonic interviews. And guess what, I finally succeeded! I found a job which only only met the above criteria but also offered something that excited me. A job of in my own field, something that I had been doing in the past, something that I am good at and something that I am confident of being successful

It took me 2 long questionnaires, 4 even longer online tests, 4 personal interviews with 6 different people over the period of 4 weeks to bag it, but all this just gave me a greater satisfaction of triumphantly passing through such a detailed candidate selection process. Speaks volumes about the company’s professionalism too. I had such a great time going through all this and finally nailing it just made me pinch myself to realise that it was actually happening to me. The company attorney did the necessary and filed for my visa right on time.

But this wasn’t the end of my woes Ralph. The demand for US work visas is very high. After all, it’s The United States!! Tens of thousands of people across the world dream of coming here to work. A lot of them are already in the States like me or the ones who have been studying here and now looking for jobs. But there is also a big chunk of people who are not even in the country...just aspiring to come here, taking their chances by applying for the visa. As a result of which, USCIS received 172,500 petitions this year, against the 85,000 work visas that they can issue for the year (out of which 6,800 visas are already reserved for Singapore and Chile applicants)

The government has resorted to the age old method of a random selection process, better known as the lottery, to decide who all gets the visa this year. My fate will now be decided by a game of chance. My career is now dependant on sheer luck now. Can you believe that Ralph? What should I be doing now? Should I sit in a temple all day, praying for good luck? Or should resort to astrological guidance to better my stars? Or should I just sit back and wait for things to happen to me?
USCIS has already conducted the lottery on 10th April, the results of which will be declared to the applicants’ representatives over the next few weeks/ months. I’m currently undergoing this worst phase of anticipation, where I am absolutely oblivious of what’s going to happen next. For the first time in life, I feel so helpless of not being able to plan my life ahead. I do not know if 6 months from now I will be happily waking up in the morning, dressing up to go to work or if I will still be sitting on this swing with a cup of coffee, writing another blog!

In desperate need for a lot of good luck. Please wish me luck Ralph!!

Jab We Met!

6th July, 2012

It was 1 am, my weekend...a Thursday night. How can Thursday night be a weekend? Well, thats my stupid job, where I work for the Middle Eastern market and hence the weird weekend schedule.

Anyways, not deviating from the story...so I had been watching some random rom- com, as I usually did on my weekends. Buzzz goes my phone. It was an email from some guy in the States. Another bakra that my folks had short listed for me. Phewww how can they not get
tired of it.

So here's the thing, I had just turned 26 a week back...too old an age as per the Indian standards, for a girl to stay unmarried. So my family had pulled up their socks to find me a guy this year and sort me out. I had been working at a managerial position in the country's leading job portal. 5 years and still going strong. I had joined them as a fresher and today I had a team under me... People who looked up to me for their careers ahead, who worked by values inculcated in them by me. At this stage in my career, all that I had ahead of me was growth prospects, which I wanted to concentrate
on.

But going by the Indian mindset, career has a place far below in the priority list of a girl's life. Hence the search for my Mr. Perfect was on at full swing.I had been informed about this guy settled in the States, who had apparently showed interest in my Shaadi.com profile and was given my contacts for a head start. I had briefly skimmed through his profile previously. He looked alright...alright also
because I was quite sure that a calm Gujarati Patel guy wouldn't want to marry a girl from a loud Punjabi family. He would himself turn this rishta down after a few conversations. No blame comes on me and this shit is taken care of. It couldn't get better than this. But little did I know that fate had some other plans for me.

I checked my phone and read this stupidest email I had ever read (if I can take the liberty to invent this word to focus on the intensity of how lame the mail was). First, the guy addressed me as 'ju-jeetsu'! I mean who does that when you are talking to a girl for the first time...especially for such a sensitive issue. He had briefed a bit about himself...some general stuff. I scrolled down for an attachment that the mail had, which was the highlight of the mail. Normally people attach their own pictures while sending such matrimonial emails. But guess what this guy had sent...a picture of his dog.

For the record, I hate dogs!!

I read this mail, smirked at the lameness and threw the phone away dismissively. A gave two hoots to this doggy obsessed guy sitting in the other part of the globe. My movie seemed more interesting for a change.

A couple of minutes later my phone buzzed again. It's a text from the same guy
this time...a simple 'Hi' though.

'Ya ya, Hii...now will you please let me be', I thought and threw the phone back again.

A few more minutes and my phone beeped of a Whatsapp message. Ahh what a relief. One of my silly friends is awake and can entertain me at this hour of the night. I picked up my phone with a smile, just to be proved wrong. It was him
again.

How can somebody be so annoyingly persistent!

There was no escape now. Whatsapp shows a double tick when the message is read. Courtesy demanded a reply and so I did.

And this is just the beginning of how it turned in to a beautiful love story and resulting in me sitting in the State today, married to this guy! :)

Soul Mates

“I am not looking for a perfect man to get married to…but the one with flaws that I can compromise with!”

A friend made this statement this morning, who is currently in a process of checking out guys shortlisted by her parents, to get married to. This one statement stuck me so hard and made me write this blog, since it resonated exactly my thoughts. Incidentally, I happen to coincide with the idea that no living being on the face of this earth is perfect. Everybody would have their own set of short comings. But it’s for you to decide whether or not you can live with those flaws for the rest of your lives.

This explains why I do not have a list of how I want my "Mr. Right" to be, unlike most others out there. It is more than likely that you end up with someone completely opposite to the fictitious figure that appears in your check list. Or you may just loose out on your near "Perfect Mr./ Ms Right" just because you had been struck up too tight to your check list.

Speaking of perfect partners, we often say they people do eventually find their “soul mates” to spend their rest of their lives together. And this belief has its roots more than a thousand years back, when Plato- a classical Greek philosopher, gave his version of how this concept came into existence. In his dialogue The Symposium Plato has Aristophanes present a story about soul mates. Here goes the mythic story:

Aristophanes asserts that humans originally had four arms, four legs, and a single head made up of two faces. However, Zeus- the father of Gods and men (read Greek mythology), feared its strength and hegemony, so much so that he cut each one of them into halves. They were left randomly scattered on the Earth, proscribed to spend their lives in search of their other half, to complete them.

This theory is based on the belief that humans, on a subconscious level, realize that there is something missing in them and they seek the sense of completeness.

"All our young lives we search for someone to love. Someone who makes us complete. We choose partners & change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak & hope…Wondering all the while if somewhere, somehow, there's someone perfect who might be searching for us".

Going by that logic, I think we should stop matching our ‘prospectives’ with the list of 'Must haves' that all of us have in our heads, somewhere deep down. Rather, see if you feel the sense of 'completeness' with that person, because as per Plato, that’s what the objective of our lives is…to seek wholeness.

Some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity!

Being in twenties :)

Just got a forward and couldn't helping reposting it and making a larger audience read and relate to it :)

Here you go........

BEING IN TWENTIES - SOMETHING... :)

It is when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing
that there are many things about yourself that you didn't know and may
not like. You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a
year or two, but then get scared because you barely know where you are
now.

You start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those
friends that you thought you were so close to aren't exactly the
greatest people you have ever met, and the people you have lost touch
with are some of the most important ones. What you don't recognize is
that they are realizing that too, and aren't really cold, catty, mean
or insincere, but that they are as confused as you.

You look at your job... and it is not even close to what you thought
you would be doing, or maybe you are looking for a job and realizing
that you are going to have to start at the bottom and that scares you.

Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and
find yourself judging more than usual because suddenly you realize
that you have certain boundaries in your life and are constantly
adding things to your list of what is acceptable and what isn't. One
minute, you are insecure and then the next, secure.

You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your life. You feel alone
and scared and confused. Suddenly, change is the enemy and you try and
cling on to the past with dear life, but soon realize that the past is
drifting further and further away, and there is nothing to do but stay
where you are or move forward.

You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you loved could do
such damage to you. Or you lie in bed and wonder why you can't meet
anyone decent enough that you want to get to know better. Or maybe you
love someone but love someone else too and cannot figure out why
you're doing this because you know that you aren't a bad person. You
want to settle down for good because now all of a sudden that becomes
top priority. Getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look
pathetic. You begin to think a companion for life is better than a
hundred in the shack and for once you would not mind standing tall for
that special someone which otherwise you had never thought of until
now.You go through the same emotions and questions over and over, and
talk with your friends about the same topics because you cannot seem
to make a decision. You worry about loans, money, the future and
making a life for yourself... and while winning the race would be
great, right now you'd just like to be a contender!

What you may not realize is that every one reading this relates to
it.We are in our best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard
as we can to figure this whole thing out. Send this to your
twenty-something friends.... maybe it will help someone feel like they
aren't alone in their state of confusion...

We call it the "Quarter-life Crisis"

World Happy Day! :)

Amidst the Valentine week, every morning my Facebook and BBM updates are flooded with the likes of Propose Day, Teddy Day and Chocolate Day stuff. But while browsing through a newspaper this morning, I found something like today being the 'World Happy Day'. I hadn’t really heard anything like that ever, falling in the middle of this Valentine fever. Curiosity took the better of me and made be google it. The information was true indeed. 11th February, 2012 had been declared as the 'World Happy Day'.

Quite a fancy concept, isn't it? On discussing it with my team, I get a prompt statement- 'So today you should do something to make me happy then.' This was one obvious and predictable statement, which would have probably come out for me as well, if I was at their place. Yet, giving it a little more thought, does it mean that our happiness is mostly dependent on what others do for us? Can we not take it on ourselves to make us happy? Are the feelings not dependent on our own state of mind?

The same article that educated me on the concept of this day, stated about this girl, who could derive happiness out of blowing bubbles out of soap water. Those exquisitely fragile creations which came out of the end of the glass pipe dipped in soap water made her happy. I’m sure each one of us has such under lying little little things out of which we derive happiness. I’ve listed mine in one of my previous blogs. So I’m going use this one to just share what I read in that article, hoping that each of us may be able to related to at least one or two in the below listed points (if not all) and use it in our day to day life to stay happy! So here you go:

• Do not waste time doing things of little or no value that make you uneasy, feel unwanted and land you in debt. Try focusing on things that make you happy instead.
• Do not constantly blame everyone else for your rotten situation — the authorities, your friends, your parents, Justin Bieber, etc. Learn to take the ownership.
• Do not expect to fail at everything and say, “I told you so”, after everything goes as badly as you predicted. Before taking up anything challenging, tell yourself ‘I can do it’
• Do not waste time regretting past mistakes and lousy decisions taken by you. It would not magically change them. And plus, at that moment, it was exactly what you wanted.
• Do not close your mind to new ideas that might make a real difference to your life and continue doing whatever didn’t work before. Take chances. Try risking it.
• Do not presume that all your friends have the same pessimistic outlook in life as you do. Listen to their advice. Being a third party, they may be able to take a better decision for you.
• Do not think badly of yourself and say so into the mirror whenever you get a chance. Think positive and feel positive about your self.
• Do not think of your life as worthless and get people to tell you what they think is wrong about you as well. Negative feedback should be welcome only when you are ready to perceive them positively.
• Do not waste time trying to change other people, who don’t want to change. Sometimes it’s better to leave them. They are mature enough to guide the course of their own life.

So after the ‘Dos’ listed previously, here’s the list of ‘Do Nots’ for you to ponder on.

Happy Reading!
