This script can be taken as a sequel to one of my previous blogs “Getting beheaded…”, since it’s the same emotion that continues here. Please don’t be surprised, because I feel I can write a thesis on this subject now, though it’s just been about 6 months that I’ve started going through this. But I have been practically living this feeling day in and day out for these 6 Months.
While I leisurely scanned through the newspaper this morning, an article by Sonam Kalra is what sparked this emotion again in me, and hence acted as an inspiration to write this piece. She truly pointed out that the moment you step into an age which start with 2, you start getting a pressure from your family to tie the knot and “settle down” (as if Shaadi is the only settling factor left in your life, your career and other things stand absolutely no where). And this pressure gets multiplied manifold, if you happen to be a female.
There are some people who have the nerves to overlook this thrust from their family and peers and have this work their way. Also there is a category of people like me who give away their endurance and tend to give in to this pressure. No, I haven’t got married yet, but despite my unwillingness, I have agreed to step into this vicious process of going about it. One line that really stuck me in Sonam’s article was:
“Making the most important decisions of your life in a hurry, under duress of someone’s constant nagging, could turn out to be a big regret in life. Please remember that the person you’ll marry will have the face you’ll see first thing in the morning, for the rest of your life.”
Decisions such as getting married or starting a family shouldn’t be taken under the social influence (though in 90% of the cases, it happens that ways only). I just can’t seem to understand what sadistic pleasures do the relatives or the neighborhood aunties get by poking their unwanted nose into the lives of the others. From my perspective, they not only irate me by talking stuff about me to my parents or their likes, but they also loose respect that they had built up till now. For God’s sake, stop speculating my wedding date and get a life!! I am sure you have better things to do…
I accept the fact that I have been one of the crowds, picking on my cousins when they were to get married. But now, being into the same shoes, I realize how annoying does it get when you go anywhere and people bombard you with the likes of the same question:
“So when do you plan to get married?” (I plan to elope; you have a problem with that?)
“I feel like wearing new clothes, when do you give us a chance?” (Excuse me, why do I have to put my marital status at stake for it?)
“You are a big girl now, high time you should get hitched” (Is it? Thanks for telling me that. I wouldn’t have realized it ever, if it wasn’t for you…Grrrrrr)
“Are you not seeing anyone? Let me know, I’ll put this forth in front of your parents and make it work!” (Awwww…thanks a ton Aunty, but unfortunately I have the balls to tell my parents about it myself. Don’t need YOUR help for it...huhhh)
Phewwww
I so want to break free from these societal pressures and command my life my own way. But do what may, you’ve still gotta face the above questions with a smile and be at your politest best while answering those question (when even you want to show middle finger to them). Your parents’ ‘izzat’ is at stake…what to do!
Anyways, I do hope of getting away with this as early as possible and hence give a peace of mind to a lot of people around me. Wish me luck!!! :D

Happy Living!
I read it some where: “The mark of a successful man is one that has spent an entire day on the bank of a river without feeling guilty about it.”
I completely second the thought. The urban lifestyle today is so full of stress for any average individual, with their minds overextended and put in traction for various factors. People run as fast as they can, in the race of life, to over take their peers. But in this quest to win, that they end up losing their peace of mind, their family bonds, their social life and things like this that ‘money can’t buy’-as MasterCard puts it. :)
So here’s a conscious effort to put together a few things that you could follow to stay happy. Not that I am a pro at it, but these things work for me. So thought of sharing it: it may work for you as well :)
DON’T carry work home: Its very important to give due importance to each of the elements in your life. You work needs you, but so does your family, your kids, your friends, your health, your society. Each of them should get its due, without any bias, to stay satiated.
Child Therapy: For me, its one of the most integral things to follow. You need to be matured and balanced, but sometimes is good to just let out the child in you. Remember the games we used to play when we were young? Get into that mode and do stuff like clay modeling, enjoy the swings in your nearby park, make a doll house, play monopoly, decorate a Christmas tree or any such thing. This really helps you De stress yourself.
Meditate/ Work Out: it’s a universally accepted fact that any sort of meditation helps you calm yourself and put your mind at ease. You can resort to yoga or any other breathing exercises. One can also practice ‘Tabaddur’ (as in Islam) or ‘Simran/ Nam Japo’ (as in Sikhism). Also, I’m not to sure how many people are aware of it, but when we run on a treadmill, our body secretes ‘endorphins’ or the ‘happy hormones’. That’s the reason why you feel so happy and content after a good run on this machine.
Holiday: Take a break from work for a couple of days, choose a destination and hit it with your friends/ family. Try to let go of your ‘schedules’ and your ‘diets’ and your other ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ you otherwise follow, while your are away. Also, don’t forget to keep yourself away from your emails and official phone calls. Taking some time off really helps.
Gleeful Company: Try to spend most of your time, being around people who are happy and high spirited. The company that you stay in, reflects on your mood and temperament. You are more likely feel lively and pleasant, when you be around pleasant, bustling people as opposed to being around perennial whiners.
Pursue a Hobby: Remember, while in school, our summer vacations would give us time to join some hobby classes, learning new things? It may not be as easy a thing to do in today’s fast paced life, but one can always hunt for some weekend/ evening courses. Its never too late to learn a new instrument, or try some new recipes in the kitchen.
Breaking Inhibitions: A lot of times, we tend to let of of things that we really want to do, just coz we are worried about how the people around us would react. We are more bothered about maintaining an image in the eyes of the society. But at times its alright to ‘go with the flow’ and just do it. If you want to speak to a friend, who you had fought with months ago, don’t think twice. Just pick up the phone and call. Don’t let you ego stop you from it. Leave your car behind, pick up a bicycle to fetch stuff from the market. Do anything that makes you happy.
“Trust that little voice in your head that says "Wouldn't it be interesting if….” ; And then do it.”
Pleasure in the little things in life: Watching the train, getting drenched in the rain, writing stuff on a balloon and letting it go in the air, having an orange bar, imli, chuski on a street side, watching the sunrise/ sunset, messing up my hand and face while eating a chocolate…these are some of the little things in life, that can cheer me up at any given point in time. Every has his/her own list like this. Makes yours and follow it.
Follow your heart: Thinking is brain’s core job indeed, but let the heart take over sometimes. Do what you feel like doing, without thinking too much about what may happen as a result of it. Don’t miss out on opportunities coz of your dilemmas. I want to have a chocolate cake, grab a bite. You can increase your daily physical activities a bit to compensate. You want to confess your feelings for a person, just do it. At the max, your feelings would be turned down. But that’s alright. Its still worth it. At least you wont have any regrets when you wake up tomorrow morning.
You don’t have to follow these things all the time. But they can always be resorted to, when you are down and low. They may act as immediate energy boosters for you.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Champagne in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride!!

Ahlan wa sahlan to Middle East
Marhaba!!
Please don’t be shocked by the greeting, coz in the last half decade, I seem to have ‘suddenly’ made too many connections with the ‘Middle East’. First, my only brother moves to Dubai, to settle for good. Then my first ever International trip covers 3 Gulf countries: Oman, Dubai & Bahrain…psst though I just had a 2.5 hours halt in the last country and I never went out of Bahrain airport, but I don’t mind flaunting ;) Not only this, its my first ever job and I have been virtually working in the Gulf for past 3.5 years, as my division only deals with the Arabs/ expats in the Middle East for business purposes. Also, since my nephew studies Arabic as a compulsory subject in Dubai, he tries to teach me all sort of Arabic syllables he learns in school.
Being so much of it around me, I consciously decided to add the cherry on the cake: a read a series of books on Islam, starting with The Princess trilogy by Sasson and then A Thousand Splendid Suns (a marvelous work done by Hosseini, I must say). My God, so many things bizarre things happen in this part of the world, which literally gives you goose bumps. The kings still maintaining their private ‘harems’ in their palaces, eunuch slaves used to guard these harems/ palace princess’ , female circumcision, legalized polygamy, legalized prostitution, maids being sexually exploited by the young princes, the Taliban activities in Afghanistan and much more.
But a regular interaction with these Arabs, my frequent visits to Dubai has taken away the alien tag from this part of the world. I feel so much at ease with the locals, their culture, their living style, their language. Everything about them seems related to my own self. From the periphery, all Arabic speaking people, wearing long robes with their head gears look the same. But I have come to realize that each national differs from each other. A Jordanian or an Omani or an Emirati or an Egyptian, would all sound the same over the phone. But they are all distinct in their own way, may it be the way they dress or the dialect they speak.
I was fortunate enough to have a recent trip to UAE during the Ramadan season, the pre Eid fasting month in Islam. Despite the complete shut down of all the eating joints, public places till ‘Iftaar’, the country knows how to make up for the complete day after the evening Namaz. The malls bustle with Kandura & Abaya clad populace till wee hours in the morning. This black and white affair, especially during the weekend evenings, is a treat to watch. The whole country seems like a giant fete, where people are feasting and merry making.
We boast of our democratic country, a home to people from different creed and castes, with all sorts of freedoms available to us. But what are the living conditions that an average Indian gets here? What good does this so called democratic government do to them? In the veil of this equalitarianism, lies a dictatorship of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. Middle East, on the other hand, has most of the countries being ruled by Kings or Sultans. Try comparing the quality of life that an average citizen gets under this monarchy, the condition of the nations, basic infrastructure or anything else. And not only this, the Gulf countries have so many expatriates settled here, with hardly any cases of violence/ racial attacks against them by the locals, unlike Australia or US.
Despite the awry practices, there’s a lot of learning that these Arab lands gives us. I definitely try to imbibe a lot of good things from them and would keep doing that in times to come. Insha- Allah!!! :)

Getting Beheaded...Oops Wedded!! :P
I just realized that I am talking about too many serious things theses days, which is so unlike me. Sometimes I feel I’m probably caught in the wrong job. I could rather do an ‘Agony Aunt’ section in some magazine/ newspaper or I could become a Marriage Counselor or something ;) And the worst part is I feel too old for my age doing that!
Well, for those who do not know me, I’m 24, no strings attached. This is my deadline for doing whatever the hell I want to and getting away with it. A few years down the line, I won’t have this luxury. My family is all set to have me handcuffed :)
I am fortunate enough to be born in a family who wouldn’t randomly pick anybody and fasten me with him. They would be more than happy to have me do all the work of finding myself a scapegoat and convincing him to spend the rest of his life with me. In fact the ideal scenario for them would be that I find myself a joker, introduce him to them and then run away with him. We can marry where ever we want (may be in a Gurudwara or some Arya Samaj mandir), come back and the family can hold a small reception ceremony to welcome us. Doing this solves two purposes: one, the responsibility of marrying the daughter is taken care of and they don’t even spend too much money on a traditional ‘big-fat-punjabi-wedding’! ;)
But I guess I just wasn’t born to have such a utopian life. A loser that I am, I couldn’t patao a single guy in all these 24 years. I’ve spent 3 goddamn years studying in the North Campus of Delhi University: supposedly the most happening place in town. The department I work in has the youngest crowd in the entire company. No wonder people find it hard to believe that I am NOT dating anyone. And I don’t blame them for it. Most of the times I end up wondering the same! :P
But then I’ve got someone to put the blame on: I allege my friends who’ve been with me in college for it. Those assholes never left me alone and never made me feel the need to have boyfriend. I was all so content being with them- hanging around, partying, experimenting things! And office, I strongly believe, is not a place to make friends, forget boyfriends!
So here I am, at the mercy of my family members, enduring their scornful looks, for finding me a life partner. I remember, ever since I’ve given an affirmative nod to start finding a match for me, I have become a source or entertainment and time pass for too many people around me (all my immediate family members to start with). Getting me married has become an AGENDA of their life. They breathe, eat, and sleep dreaming of marrying me off. At any given point in time, they have a handful of prospect ‘grooms’ ready for me. Not only this, they have even visualized my life plans with each one of them. While meeting the guy, the nervousness on their faces is commendable… as if they are the ones who are going to be judged by the boy, not me!
These people have all plans set:- the wedding theme, the venue, the functions, the guest list, the wedding gifts, the shopping, the jewellery, the Chandni Chowk bridal lehenga, the designer outfits each one is planning to flaunt, the caterer who would do the food, the traditions to be followed…the only thing missing from the picture is the ‘Dulha’!!
So the required steps have been taken: my profile has been uploaded on the leading matrimonial sites, I have been made some nice, decent crepe suits to be worn when being displayed in front of the morons that they short list for me, and I am being trained to act all feminine and lady like {blush} The tom boyish attire and behavior wouldn’t work any more. Matrimony has to prioritize over my friends and my career.
As for me, it looks like a short life. Any day, I would be married to someone who I haven’t even met till now, who may be a complete contrast to what I am, who’s idea of fun may not coincide with mine. So I’m making the most of what is left for me... By not thinking. By not planning. By not caring :)
Cheers!!!

Birthday Blow outs
The flaming month of June has begun. It’s that time of the year again when despite the sweltering weather; I’ve always found myself in high spirits. And why not, it’s my birthday month after all. Being the youngest member of my clan, birthdays have always been made a special affair to me. As a kid, it meant that it was one day in the whole year, when you were free to commit the deadliest of blunders of your life (which could even mean breaking a glass at home), and get away with it.
There are some very special memories attached to this month, which I’d want to write about. As a custom, any one day in this month was chosen by my brother, which was known as a “birthday shopping day” to us, which he took as an excuse to get the car from dad to take his girlfriends out, on the pretext of making me shop for my special day ;)
How mean, isn’t it? But I never seemed to mind it. I always had it work in my advantage. After all, I could ask for any thing I wanted, during the day. And my brother had to abide by it. He wouldn’t want to leave a bad impression on his girl, would he? :D
So no matter how much he loathed it, he had no choice but to put his best foot forward and be a darling, loving brother (a beast is disguise :P). No girl likes her man to be insensitive and rude to his cute little sister.
{I wished you could see the big LOL expression on my face while I write this}
Not only this, but this day out also gave me a chance to hang around with his bunch of friends. Being 9 years younger to him, it was really ‘cool’ for me to gang up with the his friends and be a part of the get tog ethers which did not mean wearing nice clothes, visiting friends, playing hide n seek and then having your parents pick up back home. It meant catching up with the whole bunch of old pals, sharing a pizza or some pork momos at Chanakya, chit chatting and just chilling out.
Another essential part of the birthday celebrations was getting the invitation leaflets, preparing the guest list and sending in the invites. The night before my birthday was spent decorating the drawing room with those bright streamers, balloons, a big Happy Birthday hanging and all sorts of decorations. The excitement level used to be at its peak. And the lead here was of course…bhaiya! :)
On one of the birthdays, in the year when he was to get married, he took all the pains to have his fiancĂ©e sneak out of her house, to cut my birthday cake at midnight. Keeping in mind the authoritarian family she came from, it definitely was the greatest gesture of love I could’ve got from her. I even got a peck on my cheek, from a female who has never believed in physical displays of affection, even with her own parents :D
Parents always make your birthday special in a parent’s way. They’d love you, give you expensive presents, make your favorite dishes, and take you out for dinner. But it’s your siblings who make your birthdays ‘Rocking’ in the real sense of the word. And my brother has made sure he has always done that for me, whenever we are together on this day in the past 23 years. The last birthday I spent with him, he took me out for a ‘mujra-dinner’ in Shereton Dubai and had the entire assemblage sing a birthday song for me on the orchestra.
See, this authenticates my statement, when I say he always makes it carnivalesque and zippy ;)
My 24th birthday is round the corner. As every year, my excitement level is at its peak. Though I am not gonna be with my brother this time, but I look forward to a nice one indeed. All my friends please catch the hint… ;)
Cheers!!

Cheers!!
